As we approach Holi, the Indian spring festival of colours, join GemArts to mark the season with a series of concerts in partnership with MUSICON at Durham University. The spring is celebrated in the Indian arts as a time of new life, playfulness and the appreciation of beauty, and Indian music is perfectly adapted to capture these moods. Whatever the weather outside, immerse yourself in our celebration of the coming spring with superb exponents of the classical tradition.

For our finale we move to the intimate setting of St Chad's College Chapel for a concert by Kirpal Singh Panesar, one of the world’s leading performers of the bowed instruments esraj and tar shehnai (literally ‘string shawm’, named for the similarity of its tone to that of the wind instrument). In fact, Kirpal had the great benefit of training under India’s great master of the shehnai, Ustad Bismillah Khan, to complement that of Ustad Surjeet Singh (master of the sarangi) and Ustad Gurdev Singh (sarod and esraj) with the blessings of Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji.

Kirpal has performed at prestigious venues across the UK such as the Lowry Theatre (Salford), Sage (Gateshead) and Buckingham Palace, and extensively across Europe and Asia. As well as being a soloist, Kirpal’s versatility has brought him the opportunity to accompany many artists such as Pandit Rajan Mishra and Ustad Sukhwinder Singh Pinki. His mastery of these rare and beautiful instruments with their soulful and ethereal sound makes this a rare treat. Kirpal will be accompanied by Bhupinder Chaggar on tabla, one of the leading disciples of the renowned tabla maestro of the Benares gharana, Pandit Sharda Sahai.

The concert will comprise presentations of traditional Hindustani ragas and talas.
