Jesse Bannister is widely regarded as the finest Indian saxophonist in Europe.

Jesse is acclaimed not just as an instrumentalist, delivering a seamless fusion of jazz and Indian music, but also as a composer, with writing credits for film, TV, theatre and dance projects, as well as the Halle Orchestra and - perhaps the most surprising - the Tour de France! And touring is a big part of his life, leading projects in Asia, Europe and the USA - all of which means that performances here in his UK homeland are infrequent, and very much to be treasured.

For this gig at the Jazz Café he has put together a new quartet, all of whose members are enthusiastic about crossing musical boundaries. Guitarist Joe Harris has previously appeared at the Café with vocalist Vanessa Rani, while bassist Kenny Higgins - a frequent collaborator with Jesse - has worked alongside artists as diverse as Corinne Bailey Rae, Omar Puente and Seikou Keita. Most intriguingly, the quartet is completed by Georgie Buchanan, a self-described “vocalist and sound explorer” who works across a spectrum from folk song to inter-species communication. As a platform for Jesse’s own intricate and evocative saxophone playing, this is a distinctive and inspiring supporting cast.

Presented by GemArts with Jazz North East.
