‘Jazz goes East’ – presents an outstanding double bill, with high energy Dutch trio The Nordanians – featuring tabla player Niti Ranjan Biswas, plus London based tabla player and producer Sarathy Korwar and his quartet, building on the great reception he received at Newcastle’s Jazz Café last summer as part of the Masala Festival.

When Oene van Geel (viola), Mark Tuinstra (guitar) and Niti Ranjan Biswas (tabla virtuoso) played together for the first time there where immediately fireworks, roaring u-turns and cinematic tearjerkers. Then they started writing songs together based on traditional ragas, smashing funk and delicate chamber music. This gave them a great new impulse on stage for even more interaction and improvisation and made them build a rocking live reputation.

Sarathy Korwar is a percussionist/composer born in the US, raised in India and now based in London. Sarathy has been trained as a classical tabla player under the guidance of Shri Rajeev Devasthali and Pandit Sanju Sahai, and is equally at ease on the tabla and drum-kit.

Sarathy has performed and collaborated with likes of jazz/improvised music legends Karl Berger and Ingrid Sertso, award winning instrumentalists Arun Ghosh, Shabaka Hutchings and Indian classical musicians such as Pt. Ajay Prasanna, Pt. Bhajan Sopori, Pt. Sanju Sahai and Padmashree Pt. Pratap Pawar. In 2015, he was invited to perform for the Dalai Lama at the Royal Opera House in London.
