Mixed Media and Textiles (Part of UNITY Programme)

Artist Cath Walshaw worked with 12 women from various countries who have settled in Newcastle.  Using journeys as a theme, the women used textiles, personal photos and digital images which the women sourced to represent their cultural identity.  

The women intially worked with textiles and were later introduced to digital photography by Cath who showed how photography can be manipulated and included in their final art work – this was an excellent opportunity whereby the women developed a new skill and interest in a new digital art form area. The women also arranged a visit to the Discovery Museum to get further inspiration for their art work.  

The works were exhibited in one of the busiest public spaces in Newcastle, Newcastle Central City Library, where GemArts director, Vikas Kumar, and artist, Cath Walshaw, introduced the works and spoke about the project at the opening event.
